Legacy verified badge or Meta Verified: what each one actually gives you

Said Media Agency guide cover: Legacy vs Meta Verified

A legacy verified badge and a Meta Verified badge confirm the same thing: that the account is the authentic presence of the person or brand it represents. The difference is in how you got it and what comes with it. A legacy badge was granted under Instagram’s earlier rules, which required the account to be notable and unique, and it comes with nothing else. Meta Verified is a paid subscription with an ID check that adds enhanced support, impersonation protection and other benefits. Neither one protects an account from bans or mass reporting.

This guide compares the two side by side. If your real question is whether a badge keeps an account safe, our guide to whether verification protects you from bans answers that in depth.

The short answer

  • Same meaning on the profile. Both badges say the account is who it claims to be. Instagram says neither is a symbol of importance or authority.
  • Legacy: granted for notability under earlier rules, free, no subscription, no support channel.
  • Meta Verified: a monthly subscription with a government ID check, enhanced support by chat and email, impersonation protection and other features that vary by plan.
  • You can have both. Instagram says accounts with an existing badge can still subscribe.
  • Neither is immunity. Both can be removed, and both accounts can be disabled under the same rules as everyone else.

Three kinds of badge, not two

“Legacy verified” is the name people use for badges issued under Instagram’s earlier eligibility rules. Instagram’s page on verified badges explains that the badge now means Instagram has confirmed the account is the authentic presence for that person or brand, and that previously it also required the person or brand to be notable and unique. You may still see badges that represent those earlier requirements, and Instagram says accounts already verified under them saw no immediate changes.

Notability verification has not disappeared, though. Instagram’s requirements page lists two ways to get a badge today:

  1. Subscribe to Meta Verified.
  2. Apply as a public figure, celebrity or brand. The account must be authentic, unique (one verified account per person or business, with exceptions for language-specific accounts), complete (public, with a bio and profile photo, and active) and notable (a well-known, highly searched person, brand or entity featured in multiple news sources, with paid or sponsored media not counted).

So in practice there are three groups: badges kept from the old system, badges granted for notability today, and badges that come with a subscription. The first two work the same way; the comparison below treats them together.

The Meta Verified details come from Meta’s creator subscription page, which also says plans, benefits and availability vary by region, app and account. The review after you subscribe can take up to 3 business days.

What the legacy badge gives you

A legacy badge does one job well: it tells followers, customers and partners which account is the real one. Instagram calls the badge a tool to help people find the real accounts of people and brands. For a creator or brand that is regularly copied, that is worth a great deal.

It also carries a constraint. Instagram says that once verified, public figures, celebrities and brands that meet its requirements may not change their username, and that verification cannot be transferred to a different account. Choose the handle before applying; it is effectively permanent.

What it does not include is any support route. Meta says enhanced support is only available for active Meta Verified subscriptions. A legacy badge, however old, does not open a chat with an agent.

What Meta Verified adds

Meta Verified for creators is sold in plans. Every plan Meta lists includes the badge, impersonation protection and enhanced support by chat and email; higher plans add prioritised support, a phone call request and dedicated case monitoring, along with features such as a featured profile and links in Reels.

The subscription has conditions of its own. You must be at least 18 (or the age of majority where you live), be in a country where it is available, and have a government-issued photo ID. Advanced Protection must be enabled on the profile and cannot be disabled once the subscription is active. Profile changes are limited before you apply, and if a change to a verified profile is not approved because it violates Meta’s policies, the subscription may be revoked. If the subscription is revoked, you lose all benefits immediately; if you cancel, you typically keep them until the end of the billing cycle.

For a legacy badge holder, the useful additions are support and impersonation protection. The badge itself, you already have. Our guide to what Meta Verified support can and cannot do explains why the support is most useful when it is in place before a problem starts.

What neither badge gives you

Neither badge exempts an account from enforcement. Instagram’s page on applying for a badge says it can remove verified badges at any time and may disable the account for reasons such as selling the badge or trying to get verified through a third party. Meta Verified subscribers must follow the same Terms of Use and Community Standards, and a policy violation revokes the subscription.

The belief that an old badge protects against spam reports and unfair complaints usually comes from a real system called cross-check. Meta’s Transparency Center says cross-check adds levels of review for content that carries a higher risk of a mistaken removal, ranked on factors such as predicted reach. But Meta also says cross-check “does not exempt” anyone from its content policies, only a designated group of employees can add entities to its lists, and Meta does not confirm who is on them. Its description does not mention verification badges.

The accurate version: on a high-visibility account, additional review can reduce the risk of a wrongful removal. The badge itself, legacy or paid, does not protect you.

Which one makes sense for you

  • You have a legacy badge and the account earns money. Keep the badge, and consider adding Meta Verified for the support channel, set up before you need it.
  • You are not notable in the news-coverage sense. Meta Verified is the route open to you; Instagram judges notability applications on coverage in multiple news sources, and paid or sponsored coverage does not count.
  • You are notable but do not want a subscription. Apply for notability verification, after you have settled on the username.
  • Someone is offering to get you verified. Decline. Instagram lists trying to get verified through a third party as a reason to remove the badge. We do not sell verification, and we treat anyone who does as a warning sign.

When to get help

A badge will not decide what happens when a verified account is suspended, disabled or hit by a wave of removals; the review does. If that has happened to your account, our disabled Instagram account recovery service starts with a free case review. We work only through Meta’s official channels, we cannot grant, restore or protect a badge, and we do not promise outcomes. If the review shows that a violation was real, we will tell you and decline the case.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between legacy verified and Meta Verified?

A legacy badge was granted under Instagram's earlier rules, which required an account to be authentic, notable and unique, and it came with no subscription. Meta Verified is a paid subscription that confirms your identity, usually with a government ID, and adds benefits such as enhanced support and impersonation protection. Both badges confirm that the account is the authentic presence of the person or brand.

Can I have a legacy badge and subscribe to Meta Verified?

Yes. Instagram's help page on verified badges says that if you already have a verified badge based on prior requirements, you can still subscribe to Meta Verified. The subscription adds its benefits, such as enhanced support, on top of the identity confirmation you already have.

Does a legacy verified badge protect against bans or mass reporting?

No. Instagram says the badge is not a symbol of importance or authority, verified accounts follow the same rules and Instagram can remove the badge and disable the account. Meta's cross-check system adds review for some high-visibility content, but Meta says it does not exempt anyone from its policies, and its description does not mention verification badges.

Do legacy verified accounts get Meta Verified support?

No. Meta says enhanced support is only available for active Meta Verified subscriptions. A legacy badge on its own does not include a support channel.
