WhatsApp account banned

WhatsApp restricted your account but did not ban it: what the limit means and when it ends

Said Media Agency guide cover: Restricted, not banned

A WhatsApp restriction is a temporary limit on reaching new people, not a ban. WhatsApp says you don’t need to do anything to remove it: it ends automatically once the allocated time passes, and in the meantime you can keep talking to contacts and groups you have chatted with before. A ban is different: the app says the number can’t use WhatsApp, and the only way back is the Request review button.

The short answer

  • The message: “Your account is restricted right now” or “Your account may be restricted soon”.
  • What stops: chats and calls with new contacts, new groups, adding members to groups, and linked devices.
  • What still works: chats and calls with people and groups you have messaged or called before.
  • How long: tap New Chat and pick a contact you have never chatted with; a pop-up shows the time remaining.
  • What to do: nothing to remove it, but stop whatever triggered it. WhatsApp says users engaging in spam, automated or bulk messaging could be banned.

Restricted, temporarily banned or banned?

WhatsApp uses different words for different states, and each one has a different next step.

  • Restricted: “Your account is restricted right now.” Time-limited, existing chats keep working, and it ends on its own. Source: WhatsApp’s page on restricted accounts.
  • Restriction warning: “Your account may be restricted soon.” The same page covers it: no action is needed to remove it, but it is a clear signal to change how you message.
  • Temporarily banned: WhatsApp links this message to unofficial versions of the app and to scraping, and the fix is to switch to the official app. Source: temporarily banned accounts.
  • Banned: “This phone number can’t use WhatsApp.” The appeal is the Request review button, and if there is no button, WhatsApp says the ban is final. Source: account bans.

What a restriction blocks

WhatsApp says that while your account is restricted:

  • you can keep communicating with contacts and groups you have exchanged chats or calls with before;
  • you can’t start chats or calls with new contacts;
  • you can’t create new groups or add new members to groups;
  • you can’t use linked devices, and you may be logged out of some companion devices.

In practice, a restricted account still works for the people you already talk to and stops working for growth: new customers, new leads, new group members. That is the point of it. WhatsApp says a restriction means recent activity on the account might be showing signs of spam, automated or bulk messaging.

If WhatsApp stopped working on your computer at the same time, that fits: linked devices are among the things a restriction switches off.

How to see how long it lasts

WhatsApp does not publish a standard length for restrictions. The app tells you instead. WhatsApp’s instructions:

  1. Tap New Chat.
  2. Select a contact you have never chatted with before.
  3. A pop-up shows the time remaining if your account is still restricted.

When the restriction ends, WhatsApp says you will receive a notification in the app.

What caused it

WhatsApp’s explanation is short: restrictions follow activity that looks like spam, automated or bulk messaging, and the same activity, continued, can lead to a ban. Look at what changed recently:

  • a burst of messages to numbers that had never chatted with you;
  • the same text, often with a link, sent to many people in a short time;
  • a tool, extension or unofficial app sending messages through the account;
  • many people added to groups who did not ask to join;
  • a promotion forwarded to contacts who did not expect it.

Each of these maps onto a practice WhatsApp’s responsible use guide tells users to avoid: unwanted messages, automated or bulk messages, contact lists that aren’t yours, and over-using broadcast lists. If the restriction hit a business number, our guide to what the rules allow when messaging customers covers opt-in, broadcasts and automation in detail.

What to do while you wait

  • Fix the cause. Uninstall unofficial apps, switch off automation, and stop messaging people who have not contacted you or asked to hear from you.
  • Keep talking to existing contacts normally. That is still allowed, and it is ordinary use.
  • Answer people who message you. WhatsApp’s own advice is to message those who contacted you first or asked you to contact them.
  • Do not route around it. Asking a colleague to message your new leads from their number, or registering another number for the same campaign, moves the same pattern onto a different account.

WhatsApp’s help page does not describe a review for restrictions. It says no action is needed to remove one; the review request belongs to bans.

If restrictions keep coming back

A second or third restriction is a pattern, not bad luck. WhatsApp does not publish how many restrictions lead to a ban, so do not plan around a number. Instead, compare what happened in the days before each one: the same tool, the same kind of list, the same campaign. Whatever repeats is the cause. For a business that needs to message many customers who have not written first, the regular apps are the wrong product. WhatsApp’s responsible use guide tells users not to bulk message or auto-message, and the WhatsApp Business Platform, with its own rules on opt-in and message templates, exists for that kind of volume.

Messages that look like restrictions but are not

“Account locked due to inactivity.” WhatsApp says you need to re-register your phone number as soon as possible, or the account and all its data may be deleted. Its page on inactive account deletion says accounts are generally deleted after 120 days of inactivity, and that inactivity means the account has not connected to WhatsApp.

A business’s verified badge removed. WhatsApp says losing a verified badge isn’t the same as having your account restricted, and it doesn’t limit how you use WhatsApp. The business can keep using the WhatsApp Business app with no limits on chats, calls or groups, the subscription stays active and keeps billing, and benefits that need a verified account, such as a verified channel, become unavailable.

When to get help

A one-off restriction on a personal number needs patience, not help. Help is worth it when restrictions keep coming back, when a business number cannot reach new customers for days at a time, or when a restriction has turned into a ban. Our WhatsApp ban appeals service starts with a free case review: we work out which pattern WhatsApp is reacting to and how to change it. We cannot shorten a restriction or lift a ban, nobody outside WhatsApp can, and if the honest answer is to wait it out and send fewer messages, we will tell you that.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a WhatsApp restriction last?

WhatsApp does not publish a fixed length. To see the time left, tap New Chat and select a contact you have never chatted with before; a pop-up shows the time remaining. The restriction ends automatically and WhatsApp notifies you when it does.

Can I appeal a WhatsApp restriction?

WhatsApp’s help page does not describe a review for restrictions. It says you don’t need to take any action to remove one, because it ends automatically once the allocated time passes. The Request review button is for bans.

Can I still message my contacts while my account is restricted?

Yes. WhatsApp says you can keep communicating with contacts and groups you have exchanged chats or calls with before. You can’t start chats or calls with new contacts, create new groups, add members to groups or use linked devices.

Can a WhatsApp restriction turn into a ban?

It can. WhatsApp links restrictions to signs of spam, automated or bulk messaging, and says any user engaging in that activity could have their account banned.
