A terminated YouTube channel can only come back through YouTube’s own appeal, filed in YouTube Studio within one year of the termination date. If the appeal succeeds, the original channel returns; if it fails, the old channel stays down, and what remains is a copyright counter notification, the hacked-channel route, or a request for a brand new channel once a year has passed.
This guide follows YouTube’s own Help Center rules as of October 2026, so you can match your termination email to the right route before you spend your one real appeal.
How a YouTube channel gets terminated
YouTube terminates channels for four reasons, and the termination email names which one applies. The reason decides the route.
- Three Community Guidelines strikes within 90 days.
- A single case of severe abuse. YouTube can terminate without any warning for one serious violation. Its own examples are predatory behaviour, spam and pornography.
- A channel dedicated to a policy violation, such as one built around hate speech, harassment or impersonation.
- Three copyright strikes within 90 days. This is a separate, legal system, covered below.
A fifth mechanism catches many creators off guard: circumvention. A terminated creator may not use, own or create any other YouTube channel, including channels in which they are “repeatedly or prominently featured”. This is how “linked channel” terminations happen. The spam and linked-channel terminations of late 2025 have their own guide: terminated for spam, deceptive practices and scams.
The strike system in plain numbers
YouTube’s Community Guidelines strike system works on a rolling 90-day window. A first violation is usually a warning, a third strike inside 90 days can end the channel, and every strike expires 90 days after it was issued.
- Warning first. A first violation is typically a warning only. If you complete YouTube’s optional policy training, the warning expires 90 days after you finish the training. Breaking the same policy inside that window can turn the warning into a strike.
- First strike: one week without uploading, live streaming, scheduling or creating posts. The strike stays on the channel for 90 days.
- Second strike in the same 90 days: two weeks without posting.
- Third strike in the same 90 days: the channel may be permanently removed.
Deleting a video does not remove its strike, and once the video is deleted you can no longer appeal it. Strikes are appealed separately from terminations: within six months of the warning or strike, from the Channel violations card in YouTube Studio, once per strike, with no extra penalty if the appeal is rejected. If you are on two strikes and one is wrong, appeal it now.
How to appeal a YouTube channel termination
The appeal for a Community Guidelines termination lives in YouTube Studio:
- Open YouTube Studio on a computer and sign in with the Google Account that owns the channel. You may be asked to sign in again.
- Below the termination information, click Begin Review. You may need to complete a verification step.
- Review the reason for termination, click Next, then Start Appeal.
- Enter a contact email address and your reason for appeal, then submit.
If the Studio flow will not let you submit, YouTube links an appeal form from its channel terminations help page. Studio then shows your appeal’s anticipated review time, and the decision arrives by email.
The deadline and the limit
You have up to one year from the termination date to appeal. YouTube’s help page says creators can submit two appeals within that year, and that there is also a limit on how many times a single termination can be appealed. In November 2025, TeamYouTube said its team reviews only one appeal per channel termination, and that repeat appeals receive an automated reply pointing back to the first decision. The practical rule: write the first appeal as if it is the only one you will get.
Who reads your appeal
YouTube says it uses both automated systems and human reviewers. Automation makes a decision on its own only when the system has “a high degree of confidence”, and once a decision is appealed, “a human will review the appeal.” Appeals are judged on how YouTube’s policies apply at the time of the appeal. If a rejection arrives very fast, our note on why platforms reject appeals in minutes is written about Instagram, but its lesson carries over: give the reviewer something new to evaluate.
What a strong termination appeal contains
A strong appeal is short, names the exact policy from your email, and gives a reviewer something checkable. Reviewers are comparing your channel against a policy, not reading your story, so precision beats length.
- Quote the policy from your email, word for word. “Terminated under the spam, deceptive practices and scams policy” gives a reviewer a starting point. “My channel was deleted for no reason” does not.
- Say what the channel actually is: what you publish, how often, and how the content is made or transformed.
- Answer the stated reason directly. If the email says your channel was linked to another channel, say whether you own, manage or ever had access to it, and who has access to yours.
- Point to evidence a reviewer can verify: raw footage, project files, licences for music or clips, a business registration, a website or other verified profile under the same name.
- Stay factual. No threats, no subscriber counts, no accusations about AI.
Screenshot the termination email and the Studio notice first. And do not open a new channel or re-upload your videos while you wait: YouTube treats posting content from a terminated creator as circumvention.
If the channel is a source of income and you would rather have that single appeal checked before it goes out, our YouTube channel recovery page explains how we work, and a free case review is the first step.
Copyright terminations follow a legal route
A copyright strike means YouTube removed content after a legal removal request from a rights holder. Three copyright strikes within 90 days make the account and any associated channels subject to termination, and if a channel linked to yours collects three active strikes, yours is exposed as well.
There are three ways to resolve a copyright strike: complete Copyright School and let the strike expire 90 days after it was applied; ask the claimant to retract; or file a counter notification if the removal was a mistake or your use qualifies as an exception such as fair use. A terminated channel can still file counter notifications, through YouTube Studio or by email, fax or mail (email goes to copyright@youtube.com).
A counter notification is a legal document. YouTube shares it, including your full legal name and address, with the claimant, and you sign it under penalty of perjury. If it is valid, the claimant has 10 US business days to show evidence of legal action; if they do not, the content is reinstated. Our guide to counter notices for false copyright strikes helps you judge whether to file one. Official YouTube copyright emails come from no-reply@youtube.com; fake “copyright strike” messages are a classic phishing route into creator accounts.
If the channel was terminated after a hack
Hijacked channels are often used to post scams, and the termination lands on the real owner. Recover and secure the Google Account first, then appeal with the form on YouTube’s hacked-channel help page. YouTube warns the appeal may fail if recovery is incomplete, and that it can generally only help with incidents from the past nine months. It also offers a hacked channel assistant chat, and Partner Program creators can contact Creator Support once the account is back. The phishing scripts are the same on every platform; see how account takeovers happen.
Your channel is not your Google Account
A YouTube channel termination is not a disabled Google Account. After a termination you can still sign in to YouTube Studio to read the details and download your Google data, but not your YouTube content. Partner Program members stop earning, and YouTube may withhold unpaid earnings.
If the entire Google Account is disabled, every Google sign-in fails. That has its own appeal: sign in on a browser and select Start Appeal. For some policy violations, Google reviews up to two appeals.
If the appeal fails: the new-channel pilot
Since October 2025, YouTube has run a pilot that lets some terminated creators request a brand new channel. The rules:
- You can request it only one year after the termination date. During that year you can still appeal.
- It is not available after terminations for copyright infringement or Creator Responsibility violations, or if you deleted the channel or Google Account.
- Eligible creators see a “Request new channel” option in YouTube Studio on desktop, rolling out gradually.
- YouTube weighs whether the violations were particularly severe or persistent, and whether the creator’s on- or off-platform activity harmed, or may continue to harm, the community.
- It is a fresh start. Old subscribers and videos do not come back. You may re-upload prior videos that meet the Community Guidelines, and you can apply for the Partner Program once the new channel qualifies.
For creators in the EU
If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act lets you take a platform decision, including an account suspension, to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body such as Appeals Centre Europe. Its decisions are not binding. In October 2025 the centre reported that YouTube had provided content in only 29 of 343 eligible disputes, so treat it as an extra route, not a replacement for the Studio appeal.
When there may be no way back
If the channel did post what the email describes, such as scraped re-uploads, mass-produced videos or a sub-for-sub scheme, an appeal is unlikely to succeed, and no one can change that. The realistic path is the new-channel pilot after a year. Paying someone who promises an inside contact usually costs money and often the Google Account too. Legitimate help never needs your password or two-step verification codes.
When it makes sense to get help
If your appeal has been rejected, or the channel is a source of income and you want the one appeal written properly, we can look at the case. Our YouTube channel recovery service works only through YouTube’s official appeal, copyright and hacked-channel routes. It starts with a free case review: we reply within 5 business days, we decline cases where the violation looks genuine, and we never ask for passwords or login codes. No one can guarantee a reinstatement, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Frequently asked questions
Can a terminated YouTube channel be restored?
Yes, but only through YouTube's own appeal. You have up to one year from the termination date to appeal in YouTube Studio. If the appeal succeeds, the original channel comes back. If it fails, the old channel stays down, and the remaining routes are a copyright counter notification, the hacked-channel process, or a request for a new channel after one year.
How many times can I appeal a YouTube channel termination?
YouTube's help page says creators can submit two appeals within the one-year window, and that there is also a limit per termination. In November 2025, TeamYouTube said its team reviews only one appeal per channel termination and sends automated replies to repeat appeals. Write the first appeal as if it is the only one you will get.
How long does a YouTube termination appeal take?
YouTube does not publish a fixed time. After you submit, YouTube Studio shows a confirmation and your appeal's anticipated review time, and the outcome arrives by email. Creators have reported answers ranging from minutes to several months.
Can I make a new YouTube channel after termination?
Not on your own. A terminated creator may not use, own or create any other YouTube channel, and doing so counts as circumvention. Since October 2025, some creators can request a new channel through a pilot in YouTube Studio, but only one year after termination, and not after copyright or Creator Responsibility terminations.
Does a YouTube channel termination disable my Google Account?
Not by itself. A channel termination and a disabled Google Account are separate actions. After a termination you can still sign in to YouTube Studio to read the details and download your Google data, although you can no longer download your YouTube content. A fully disabled Google Account has its own appeal.
Can someone restore my channel through a contact at YouTube?
No legitimate service can. Terminations are reviewed by YouTube through YouTube Studio and its official forms. Anyone selling an inside contact, a guaranteed unban, or asking for your password or two-step verification codes is running a scam.
