Instagram removes verified badges for reasons it lists in writing. For badges granted on notability, Instagram says it can remove verified badges at any time, and names selling or transferring the badge, using the profile to promote rule-breaking services, getting verified through a third party, switching between public and private too often and giving false information. For Meta Verified, the badge is a subscription benefit, so it also disappears when the subscription is revoked, for example after a failed payment or a policy violation.
The fix depends on which kind of badge you had and which reason applies. This guide walks through both.
The short answer
- First, identify the badge. A notability or legacy badge and a Meta Verified badge are removed for different reasons. Our comparison of legacy verified and Meta Verified explains the difference.
- Notability or legacy badge: check the five reasons Instagram lists below. If one applies, remove the cause before you do anything else.
- Meta Verified badge: check the subscription screen, your payment method, your email and in-app notifications. Revocation removes every benefit immediately.
- Check the account too. Open Account Status. A badge removed for a policy violation can be a sign of wider enforcement.
- Reapply only when the cause is gone. After a denied request, Instagram says you can submit a new one in 30 days.
- Never pay a third party to restore it. That is itself a listed reason for removal.
Reasons Instagram lists for removing a badge
Instagram’s page on what happens when you apply for a verified badge says Instagram can remove verified badges at any time, and may take away the badge or disable the account if you:
- Advertise, transfer or sell your verified badge.
- Use your profile picture, bio or name to promote services or activities that violate the Community Standards or Terms of Use. Instagram names those three profile fields specifically.
- Attempt to verify your account through a third party. This is the risk behind every offer to get you verified.
- Switch your account from public to private too many times. Instagram does not publish a number.
The same page adds a fifth: if you provide false or misleading information during verification, Instagram says it will remove the badge and may take further action to disable the account.
Instagram’s requirements page is also worth rereading. A notability badge is granted to accounts that are authentic, unique, complete and notable, and “complete” includes being public. If the account has stopped meeting those requirements, that is a likely place to look.
Reasons a Meta Verified badge disappears
With Meta Verified, the badge is part of the subscription. Meta’s page on revoked subscriptions lists the common reasons a subscription is revoked or cancelled unexpectedly:
- Payment issues: the payment method fails and there is no backup on file.
- Verification failure: verification does not pass review after the first payment.
- Profile updates: you changed the verified profile and the change was not approved because it violates Meta’s policies.
- Policy violations: the verified account violated Meta’s policies.
- Account deletion.
- Bundle or account type changes: removing an account from a bundle, or switching an Instagram account from business to personal, leads to revocation after 7 days or at the end of the billing cycle, whichever comes first.
- Eligibility changes: for example, moving to a country where Meta Verified is not available.
- App store changes: changing the subscription directly through the Apple App Store or Google Play.
Meta says it will try to notify you by email and in-app notification, and that revocation removes all benefits immediately, including support and any open support cases. Cancelling is different: you typically keep the benefits until the end of the billing cycle, and then they end.
Check whether the account itself is in trouble
A badge removed for a policy reason rarely travels alone. Open Account Status and look for removed content, restrictions or warnings. If you find them, the badge is the smaller problem; deal with the enforcement first, using the review options Instagram offers for each decision.
Remember what the badge never did: it did not protect the account from rules or reports. Our guide to whether verification protects you from bans explains why, and what Meta’s cross-check review does and does not do.
If the account was hacked first
In our experience, a common route to a lost badge starts with a hack. Verified accounts are valuable to scammers, who change the name, bio and photo and use the account to promote crypto or investment schemes. That matches one of the listed reasons almost word for word: using the profile to promote services that violate Instagram’s rules. Secure the account first through Instagram’s hacked account process, remove everything the attacker added, then deal with the badge. Our guide to a hacked account posting crypto scams covers the first hours.
What you can do
If you had Meta Verified:
- Open the subscription screen on the verified profile and check its status.
- Check your email and notifications for a revocation notice and its reason.
- If the cause was payment, update the payment method and add a backup before you subscribe again.
- If the cause was a profile change, bring the profile back in line with Meta’s naming and policy requirements.
- Re-subscribe once the account meets the eligibility requirements. Meta says you may need to make updates to your account or payments before signing up again.
If the subscription is still active and the badge is missing, contact Meta Verified support from the verified profile; questions about verification status are one of the issue types Meta lists for that channel.
If you had a notability or legacy badge:
- Identify which listed reason fits, and remove the cause: clean up the bio and links, stop switching privacy settings, end any arrangement with a third party.
- Instagram’s help pages do not describe a separate appeal for a removed badge. The documented route is a new verification request, if the account meets today’s requirements.
- Apply once and wait. Instagram says you will hear within up to 30 days, that applying several times before a decision cancels your application, and that after a denial you can submit a new request in 30 days.
- If the account does not meet the notability requirements as they stand today, Meta Verified is the other documented way to get a badge.
What not to do
- Do not pay anyone to restore the badge. Trying to verify through a third party is one of the reasons Instagram removes badges. We do not sell verification, and we treat anyone who does as a warning sign.
- Do not apply repeatedly. Multiple applications before a decision cancel the request.
- Do not open a new account to start over. Instagram says verification cannot be transferred to a different account, and a duplicate account creates its own problems.
When to get help
If the badge went together with removed content, restrictions or a suspension, the account is the priority, and that is the work behind our disabled Instagram account recovery service. It starts with a free case review. We work only through Meta’s official channels, we cannot restore or grant a badge, and we do not promise outcomes. If the review shows that a violation was real, we will tell you and decline the case.
Frequently asked questions
Why did Instagram remove my verified badge?
Instagram says it can remove verified badges at any time, and lists reasons such as advertising, transferring or selling the badge, using your profile to promote services that break its rules, trying to get verified through a third party, switching between public and private too many times, and giving false or misleading information during verification. For Meta Verified, the badge also goes when the subscription is revoked or ends.
Can I appeal a removed verified badge on Instagram?
Instagram's help pages do not describe a separate appeal for a removed badge. If you have a Meta Verified subscription, its support channel can answer questions about your verification status. Otherwise, the documented route is to fix the cause and request verification again if you meet the current requirements.
How long do I have to wait to reapply for verification?
If a verification request is denied, Instagram says you can submit a new request in 30 days. Applying several times before you receive a decision cancels your application. For Meta Verified, Meta says to make sure the account meets the eligibility requirements and follows its policies before signing up again.
Did I lose my badge because my Meta Verified payment failed?
It is possible. Meta says a subscription is cancelled if the payment method fails and there is no backup payment method on file, and that a revoked subscription loses all benefits immediately, including the badge. Check your subscription screen, your email and your in-app notifications.
