Doxxing on Reddit: how to get personal information removed fast

Said Media Agency guide cover: Doxxed on Reddit

Doxxing is the one Reddit problem with a clean answer. Sharing someone’s personal information is a sitewide policy violation, moderators remove it under their own rules, Reddit’s admins remove it under theirs, and both tend to act quickly. The cases that drag on are the ones where the target replied, argued, or reported the wrong thing.

Here is the fast path, then the parts that come after.

Minute one: do not engage

Do not comment, do not message the poster, do not ask friends to comment. Every interaction keeps the thread alive in feeds, and a reply that says “that’s not my address” tells the thread what to correct. Screenshot the post and every comment that contains personal details, with the URL and the timestamp visible, then close the tab.

Route one: the subreddit’s moderators

Nearly every subreddit prohibits doxxing in its own rules, and moderators can remove a post within minutes of a modmail. Send a message through the subreddit’s modmail with the post link, the specific comments, and one sentence: “This post shares my personal information (address/phone/workplace), which violates rule [x] and Reddit’s content policy. Please remove it.” No story, no legal language.

Route two: Reddit’s sitewide report

Use the report link on the post and choose the option for sharing personal information, or use Reddit’s report forms from a browser, which allow more detail. Report each comment that contains details separately. Reddit’s personal information policy covers home addresses, phone numbers, personal emails, workplace details used to target someone, identity documents, financial details, and “connecting the dots” between an anonymous account and a real identity for harassment. In our experience these reports are actioned faster than most; hours to a couple of days is typical.

If the doxx is combined with threats, report those separately under the violence or harassment policies as well; they reach different queues and escalate the case.

Route three: when the poster keeps going

Doxxers often repost under new accounts or in new subreddits. Each repost is a new violation; report each one. Reddit also acts on the accounts behind repeated doxxing, and a pattern of reports with the same details makes that easier. Keep a simple log: URL, date reported, outcome.

What Reddit’s policy does not cover

Publicly available professional information about public figures, published by themselves, is generally not treated as doxxing. A journalist’s byline, a company’s registered address, a politician’s office. If you are a business owner and the “doxx” is your business address, the personal information route will likely fail; the harassment route, or the false accusation routes in our Reddit false accusations guide, may apply instead.

Removal from the thread does not remove what was copied. Three follow-ups:

  • Reposts and screenshots on Reddit. Report under the same policy; a screenshot of removed doxxing is still doxxing.
  • Other platforms. X, Facebook, Discord and others have equivalent personal information policies, usually with their own priority queues.
  • Search engines. If the thread or its copies appear in results for your name, Google’s removal process covers personal contact information (address, phone, email) and identity documents in search results, independently of the hosting site. It is narrower than people hope but it works for exactly this category.

Your safety, separately from removal

If the information includes your home address and the context is hostile, treat it as a physical risk while the reports run: tell the people you live with, consider whether to inform local police (many forces have a process for online threats), and check whether your address is exposed elsewhere (people- search sites, domain registrations, old profiles). Removal on Reddit is the first step, not the last.

Businesses and staff

When a company’s employees are doxxed in a campaign against the business, the process is the same but the volume is different: many posts, many subreddits, many staff. Centralise it: one person collects screenshots and URLs, files reports per item under the personal information policy, and keeps the log. Corporate statements in the thread do not help; the reports do.

When to get help

A single post with your details is a fifteen-minute job: modmail, report, silence. Help is worth it when the doxxing is a campaign across accounts and platforms, when it is paired with false accusations that need other routes, when it is ranking in search for your name, or when staff of a business are being targeted at scale. That is the casework in our Reddit content removal service: every item reported under the right policy, the reposts tracked, search removals filed where they apply, and a log of everything. No brigading, no retaliation, no guarantees, and a free case review first.

Frequently asked questions

Does Reddit remove doxxing?

Yes. Sharing personal or confidential information about someone is a sitewide content policy violation, regardless of subreddit rules. Reports under that policy are among the faster ones Reddit actions, often within hours to a couple of days.

What counts as personal information under Reddit's policy?

Home addresses, phone numbers, personal email addresses, workplace details used to target someone, identity documents, financial information, and linking an anonymous account to a real name with intent to harass. Public figures' publicly available professional details are treated differently.

Should I reply to the post to say the information is wrong?

No. Replying confirms you saw it, keeps the thread active, and can prompt corrections that make the doxx more accurate. Report and stay silent.

The post was removed but screenshots are circulating. What now?

Report each repost under the same policy; Reddit treats screenshots of removed doxxing the same as the original. For other platforms, use their personal information policies, and for search results, Google's removal process for personal contact information.
