Someone posted false accusations about you on Reddit: the removal routes that actually exist

Reddit is the platform where a false accusation ages worst. A thread from three years ago still ranks for a person’s name, still gathers comments, and still gets screenshotted into new threads. People who come to us have usually already made the situation worse by replying, and have usually not tried the one route that works most often: the subreddit’s own rules.

Here are the routes that exist, in the order to use them, and the things that turn a removable post into a permanent one.

Route one: the subreddit’s moderators

Every subreddit is run by volunteer moderators with their own rules, and most have rules that a false accusation breaks: no doxxing, no witch hunts, no naming private individuals, no unverified claims about businesses, no harassment. Moderators remove posts under their rules far more readily than Reddit’s central teams do, and they do it in hours rather than weeks.

Read the subreddit’s rules in the sidebar. Find the one the post breaks. Send a message to the moderators through the subreddit’s modmail with the post link, the rule number, and two sentences explaining the violation. No narrative, no legal threats, no demands. Moderators are people doing unpaid work; a short, respectful, rule-based message gets read.

Route two: Reddit’s sitewide report

Reddit’s content policy prohibits, among other things, harassment, sharing personal information, impersonation, threats and non-consensual intimate media. It does not prohibit being wrong. So the report has to name the policy, not the falsehood.

• A post that names a private person and encourages others to contact or find them is harassment and often doxxing.
• A post that includes a phone number, home address, workplace or personal identifiers is personal information sharing.
• A post that pretends to be from you or your company is impersonation.
• A post that reveals private images is covered by the non-consensual media rules.

Use the report link on the post and choose the matching policy, or use Reddit’s report forms from a browser, which allow more detail and attachments. Reddit’s response can take days to a couple of weeks. Report each offending comment separately; a report on the post does not cover the thread.

Route three: the formal legal request

For defamation, Reddit accepts formal requests through its legal channels. This is not a fast route, it is not a form you fill in casually, and it is reviewed case by case, usually by people who will ask what evidence you have that the statement is false and damaging. It is worth using when the post makes a specific factual claim (a crime, a scam, a diagnosis) that you can document as untrue, and when the other routes have been exhausted. A lawyer’s letter is not required for the request itself, but a lawyer’s involvement is often what makes it credible. In some countries, court orders are the only route Reddit will act on; the platform’s own transparency reports describe which requests it grants.

What makes it worse

Replying in the thread. Every reply resets the thread’s activity, bumps it in feeds and search, and invites the original poster to escalate. If a business must respond, one calm, factual comment, once, and never again.

Getting friends to downvote or report. Coordinated voting and reporting is against Reddit’s rules and is detected. It can get your accounts banned and gives the original poster a real grievance.

Public legal threats. Posting “my lawyer will be in touch” is screenshot material. It moves the thread from a niche subreddit to a large one about people who threaten to sue Reddit users.

Creating a new account to defend yourself. Ban evasion and brigading rules apply; the new account is usually spotted, and the appearance of sockpuppets confirms the accusation in readers’ minds.

Contacting the poster directly. Occasionally it works. Usually it becomes part of the thread.

Google, separately

Once the post is removed from Reddit, search engines drop it within days to a few weeks as they recrawl. If the post cannot be removed, Google operates its own removal processes for specific categories: personal contact information, explicit images, and content that meets its defined criteria. Those are narrower than most people hope and do not cover “untrue”. Pushing the thread down with new, positive, relevant content about you is slower but often the only realistic option for a post that stays.

Businesses: a note on Reddit culture

Reddit treats businesses with suspicion by default. Corporate replies drafted by a PR team are recognised instantly and rarely help. If you respond as a business, do it as a named person, once, with facts and without adjectives, and offer to resolve the issue privately. Then stop. Focus the effort on the moderator and report routes, where tone matters less and rules matter more.

When to get help

A single post that breaks a subreddit rule is a self-serve job: read the rules, message the moderators, done.
